Jefferson v. Linn-Mar
Tuesday, February 15, 2011
The standing room only crowd got everything they wanted in a high school basketball game. Fans arrived early to see the MVC’s showcase contest. Each team delivered its blows, but in the end the #1 ranked Linn-Mar Lions was the team standing. In the end the scoreboard showed a 70-64 in favor of the Lions. With the loss Jefferson moves to 14-5 on the year, 10-5 in the MVC.
The first half followed the season’s theme of resiliency for the home court J-Hawks. In the past couple weeks the J-Hawks have battled through injuries and still managed to play at a high level. Tonight Jefferson had its point guard Taylor Olson back after battling a lower back injury. It didn’t take long for Olson to re-gain his ability to see the court.
Marcus Paige and Matt Bohannon led Linn-Mark with hot shooting from the outside. Every shot they threw up found the bottom of the net. Jefferson on the other hand had trouble finding the range early, but later found their shot behind 2 three pointers by sophomore Ky Kramer.
Jarrod Uthoff was bottled up throughout most of the first half. He did not get his first shot off until the last couple minutes of the opening quarter. He was only able to manage 5 points. Alec Saunders and Tyler Meiborg paced the J-Hawks with 7 and 9 points respectively. Going into the half Jefferson found themselves behind the narrow margin of 32-29.
The energy in the second half only seemed to pick up as both student sections exchanged chants and cheers for their own teams. Uthoff was able to find in his niche in the second half. Uthoff fought through double and triple teams to end the game at his season average of 26 points. Jefferson had two other players in double figures with Saunders at 13 and Meiborg at 11.
Jefferson was able to get the game as close as three in the final minutes. Just when it seemed the J-Hawks were able to gain the momentum Linn-Mar would come down with clutch shots and free throws. Jefferson was unable to contain the touted Lions’duo. Paige and Bohannon were able to put their team on their backs, each ending with 30 points. Linn-Mar came into tonight’s game with injuries of their own; playing without starters Ian McBrayer and Josh Montague.
The J-Hawks will need to bounce back quickly as they play their last regular season game Thursday night at Prairie.
The J-Hawks were unable to hold on to their early lead against the Lions. Jefferson fell to Linn-Mar by a final score of 56-44. Their final game is Thursday night as they travel to Prairie. Tipoff is at 6:00PM.
