Varsity Coach: Stuart Ordman

Coach Ordman is married with two children, Nina, 26, and Allison, 21.  Ginny, his wife, currently teaches Introduction to Journalism, and Yearbook at Iowa City West High School and pre-algebra at Northwest Junior High. She is a Cedar Rapids West-Sider, a graduate of La Salle High School. Coach Ordman is a graduate of New Trier East High School in Winnetka, Illinois. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Iowa and M.A. degree from St. Mary’s College.  Coach Ordman played on the New Trier High School basketball team that pulled off several upsets and finished second in the Illinois state basketball tournament.

He began his teaching and coaching career at Central High School (KC, MO). He taught sophomore and junior English and coached freshmen boys for one season and varsity girls for three.  Coach Ordman next taught and coached at Leavenworth, Kansas. He helped coach sophomore boys’ team for one year and the girls’ varsity for seven years. The girls’ varsity teams he coached won the school’s first state basketball championships in 1988 and repeated in 1989. The 1990 team finished in the final four.

Last year’s team improved dramatically as the season progressed, swept Kennedy, went 18-5, and had exciting wins over Marshalltown and Cedar Falls to win the sub-state championship.

Coach Ordman is in his 14th year at Jefferson.  He teaches physical education, including Adaptive P.E.  He is excited about the 2010-11 teams’ potential.  He directs a number of basketball camps for boys in the summer.

 

Junior Varsity Coach:  Carey Ash

Coach Ash is in his 22nd year on the basketball staff at Jefferson High School.  He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and his MA from Coe College in 2000.  He teaches physical education and also serves as the activities coordinator at Wilson Middle School.  He has coached 8th grade football at Wilson for seven years. He also has coached girl’s track at Wilson. Carey is married to Jean, an eighth grade teacher at Taft Middle School.  They have a daughter Emily who is 15, and is a tenth grade cheerleader for the J-Hawks. They also have a son Austin age 12, who plays on sixth and seventh grade basketball AAU teams. Coach Ash enjoys coaching his son’s team.


Carey and his family enjoy spending time with family and friends, and are avid Hawkeye fans and enjoy supporting all J-Hawk activities.

 

Freshman Coach: Brian Erbe

Coach Erbe is a 1972 graduate of Jefferson who participated in baseball, basketball and football. He is currently the school’s Attendance Facilitator and has been a coach in various sports at Jefferson for the past 18 years. This is his ninth year as a freshman coach in the men’s basketball program. Coach Erbe was on the football staff for eleven years and was the head 9th grade football coach for five years, he also coached track for six years, and was an assistant to Mr. Niemeyer in softball and coached in the girls’ basketball program for many years.

Coach Erbe has three children, all former J-Hawk graduates and athletes, and has six grandchildren. He looks forward to the year when the Cubs win the World Series, the Colts win the Super Bowl and the Hawkeye Football team wins the National Championship.

 

Sophomore Head Coach: Brandon Horman

Brandon Horman currently teaches Read 180 at Wilson School. He is in his fourth year of teaching after graduating from Mt. Mercy College in 2007.  He was a member of the Mount Mercy Men’s Basketball Team.  Brandon was a 3-year varsity letter-winner in basketball and a 4-year varsity-letter winner in golf at Calamus-Wheatland High School.  Brandon is a member of the schools 1,000 point club, and is the schools all-time leading rebounder.  In March of 2009 Brandon married his fiancée Jessica.  Jess is a Cardiovascular Sonographer at St. Lukes Hospital.  Brandon enjoys spending time with Jess and his family.  He also enjoys supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes.

 

Assistant Sophomore Coach:  Riley Larson

Riley Larson is a 2006 graduate of Jefferson High School where he played basketball and football.  Riley continued his basketball career at Cornell College and was a key member of the 2008-2009 Cornell squad that set a school record for wins (21-7) and qualified for the Division III NCAA Tournament.  Riley is married to Lindsy, a 2005 graduate of Jefferson and former J-Hawk basketball manager.  Lindsy is a floral designer at Hy-Vee.  Riley and Lindsy have one son Cayden, 1, who already loves shooting hoops!  Riley has helped out with J-Hawk camps and is excited to increase his contributions to Jefferson basketball.  

 

Volunteer Assistant JV / Varsity Coach: Gabe Loesch

Gabe Loesch is a 2007 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a B.A in Sports Psychology and a minor in coaching.  He worked with Cedar Falls varsity and sophomore basketball program for two years and the UNI men's basketball team before coming back to Cedar Rapids.  He was married in October 2010 to Natalie who is working to be a wedding planner. Gabe runs his own performance training business called PE Sports Performance where he works with athletes of all ages.  He has a long history of working basketball camps around the Midwest. 

 

Freshman Coach:  Randy Mathews

Coach Mathews is entering his first year as a member of the J-Hawk coaching staff and his 29th season overall, including stops at Ottumwa, North Platte (MO), Olin, Grinnell, Clear Creek Amana, and CR Washington.  Mathews has also coached baseball for 29 years and football for 24 years.  He is currently a special education teacher at Jefferson and coaches freshmen baseball. Coach Mathews graduated from Centerville High School in 1975, and was a starter on the basketball, baseball, and football teams.  He then attended Indian Hills Community College (AA) and the University of Northern Iowa (BA), playing baseball at both schools.

Coach Mathews is married to Cathy, a LaSalle High School graduate, who is employed at Metro High School.  The couple has a son, Spencer (28) who resides in Council Bluffs, and three daughters, Callie (32), Amy (30), and Lisa (26), all of whom reside in Cedar Rapids/Marion, along with three grandchildren, Chase (4), Avery (3), and Amaya (3).Away from his teaching and coaching responsibilities, Coach Mathews enjoys spending time with his family and is a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan.

 

Volunteer Assistant Varsity Coach: Mark Mueller

Mark Mueller is new to the Jefferson coaching staff this season and brings thirty-one years of basketball coaching experience to the J-Hawks. Coach Mueller graduated from Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education and ran cross country and track. Mueller participated in baseball, basketball, cross country and track in high school.  He was one of the top cross country and track distance runners in the state while competing for the J-Hawks and still holds the school and metro record in the 3200 meters that he set in 1974.

Mueller coached basketball and track at the freshman, sophomore and varsity levels at Leo High School in Chicago’s Catholic League before taking his present positions as a teacher, athletic director and basketball coach at Trinity Lutheran School. Coach Mueller still works out every day and enters several road races each year. He especially enjoys the time he spends with his wife, Silvia, and his son, Taylor, who is a junior at Jefferson.

 

Freshman Volunteer Coach: Nathan Wulff

Nathan Wulff is a 1996 graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington. He participated in basketball each of his four years in high school. He earned a B.A. from the University of Iowa as a psychology major. Nathan is married to Elizabeth Erbe, a Jefferson graduate. They are the proud parents of Lillian, born in January of 2004, and Andrew born in May 2007. This is Nathan’s ninth year with the J-Hawks and he is excited about the opportunity to contribute to Jefferson basketball.
